Theodore Tihansky - Biography
Mr. Tihansky received his formal art training at the Art Student's League in New York City, and Paier College of Art and Lyme Academy of Fine Art in Connecticut. He has also studied with landscape painter Don Stone, portraitist Aaron Shikler, and Ronald Sherr and Harvey Dinnerstein, all internationally known artists. He has taught periodically at the South County Art Association and conducted private classes in Newport.
In 1991 Ted was awarded the John Stobart Landscape Fellowship for five thousand dollars with the concurrent opportunity to show at the Lyme Academy Fine Art Gallery. During the fellowship he traveled and painted in Washington, British Columbia and Pennsylvania- ending with a month on Monhegan Island, Maine.
In 1994/1995 Ted traveled throughout the United States and Europe painting in the cities of Naples, FL; Minneapolis, MN; St. Thomas, USVI; France; Portugal; Spain and the Czech Republic. While in Prague Ted completed more than fifty pieces of work, many framed and inset with the Czech coin.
In November 1995 Ted opened the Theodore Tihansky Fine Art & Performance Gallery on Franklin Street in Newport, Rhode Island. He received wide recognition for his "Collaboration of the Arts" production. In August 1996 the gallery moved to the heart of Newport- Bowen's Wharf.
In the February 1998 issue of Northwest Airlines World Traveler Magazine, a five page spread entitled, "Brushes With Greatness", featured Mr. Tihansky.
In 1999 Ted Traveled across the U.S. in support of the HASBRO Children's Hospital, promoting the infancy unit. Sponsored by the Rhode Island Foundation for Children, his artwork was presented at the Providence Performing Arts Center in Providence, RI.
In September 2000 he returned to Art Student's League in New York City to hone his techniques. And to further his development the gallery was closed while Ted spent the winter on Monhegan Island. There he worked as a sternman on a lobster boat and spent his free time painting the harsh and splendid scenes of the island.
From June 23 to August 15, 2001 the Newport Art Musem held a retrospective of his work entitled, "Theodore Tihansky- Diary of an Artist".
In the July 2001 edition of National Geographic, a article written with truth, wit and humor, described Ted's life on Monhegan and his love for painting.
On September 15, 2001 Premier Etage in Newport, RI held and exhibit, "Four Months on Monhegan Island".
